CHRISTUS Hospitals Receive Nation’s Top Honor For Nursing Excellence

Beaumont, San Antonio and Tyler. They’ve got some of the best nurses around. How do we know?  Some of the finest hospitals, Magnet hospitals, are located in these Texas towns. They include:

  • CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital-Medical Center (San Antonio)
  • CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Saint Elizabeth  (Beaumont)
  • CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler, including the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic (Tyler)

Magnet status is an award given by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC) to hospitals that meet a set of criteria designed to measure the strength and quality of their nursing.

The Meaning of Magnet

In the early 1980s, the term “Magnet” was developed by the American Academy of Nursing to describe hospitals that can attract and retain nurses just like a magnet can pull in and hold onto certain materials.

Being Magnetic

There are 14 “Forces of Magnetism,” requirements that our hospitals must meet to be considered for the honor. Among them are strong leadership, supportive management, promoting nurses as educators and providing opportunities for professional development—all a prevalent part of these three hospitals’ CHRISTUS nursing culture.

A Very Big Deal

Southeast Texas

Awarded to only 7 percent of hospitals nationwide, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas received the national Magnet designation in 2007 and 2012 and then this week received the great news that they are once again a Magnet hospital.

The designation still remains one of the biggest highlights for nurses and was picked up by the Beaumont media.

 Trinity Mother Frances

And congrats are also in order for CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler, including the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic. Their journey to Magnet success was well documented through a beautiful video. They held similar celebrations after receiving a congratulatory phone call from Magnet.
